The Greatest Fishing Partners in the World

Corkie and Hazel. A sugar-and-spice combination for the ages. Corkie's the retriever with a sweet disposition and impeccable manners. Hazel's the blue heeler, 30 pounds of high-octane energy, with a piercing voice and a talent for comedy. One was bred to hunt birds, the other to herd cows. But they were both born to fish.

In the early years, they were steelhead fanatics. Corkie would lie right down in the frigid December water, just to be near you, while Hazel would be whirling around up on the gravel bar. They were there in the driving rain, the day you got that 18-pound buck, and the three of you drove into town to celebrate. It was steaks all around that night.

These days, they love the early summer chironomid fishing, when they can lie in the pram at your feet, enjoying the sun and eating sandwiches. Especially the sandwich part. Sure, they have their faults. But you try not to remind them of the time Corkie lost the tip section of your favorite seven weight on the Deschutes. Or when Hazel proudly dragged the rotten deer leg into the tent up near Kamloops.

It's easy to overlook those things, when you think of all the places you've been and the fish you've caught together. It seems like they've always been there with you, for as long as you can remember. Hazel, making you laugh until your sides hurt, and Corkie, who's been such a good friend you can barely express it.
