Why I Do What I Do

Why I Do What I Do

Why? You don't guide to get rich, that's for sure. I think all guides buy lottery tickets-that's our retirement plan. You don't do it for stability, either. And you certainly don't do it to have normal work hours or medical and dental or any of those kinds of things. Basically, if you want to lead a regular life, you can pretty much forget about it. And it's not like I don't think about that sometimes.

Why? How many other jobs are there where the day goes by so fast you never even look at your watch? I mean, most of time, it doesn't even feel like work, especially when you're with clients who've become friends over the years. And there's a huge amount of satisfaction that comes from teaching, too. Last year I had a father and son who were both beginners, and watching them learn something new together really made that day stand out. As a guide, you don't get to fish much yourself, but helping people catch fish and spending time with them when they're at their happiest is pretty tough to beat. These people come up here stressed out from their high-pressure jobs and hectic schedules, and for a day, all they have to think about is the fishing. It's great to be part of that. And how many other jobs are there where you're excited to get up every morning, just looking forward to the day ahead? When I think about what I do for a living, it usually feels like I'm getting away with something.

Why? It's simple, really. I can't imagine ever doing anything else.
